The Pit Post | Razza
is the Italian word for race, as in ethnicity, not to be confused with razzo, which means missile, rocket, or signal flare, as in razzo di segnalazione. Romy is my 11 year-old Hungarian Vizsla, an exceptional hound breed noted for its ability to track small or large game, follow the blood scent, and here in Tuscany sniff out the much prized truffle. The Italian word for breed, by the way, is razza. “Che razza e’?” people often ask, he is such a handsome fellow. He has a proud look, almost arrogant, though he is not, as that is a strictly human trait. In fact, the name they gave him at birth, on his papers in Budapest, translates to ‘the Noble One’. No misnomer there. While dogs have between 125 million to 300 million sense receptors in their noses compared to the 5 million in the human nose, Vizslas are up there in the 250 million range.
